  • Applied Math faculty members Arnold Kim, Lei, Yue, and Roummel Marcia have received an NSF for training undergraduate students in big data analysis. The Data-Enabled Science and Computational Analysis Research, Training and Education for Students ( DESCARTES) is a five-year program that includes (1) a scholars program for undergraduate research during the summer and the academic year, (2) a new emphasis track on data-enabled science for applied math majors, and (3) summer workshops for high school teachers.   • Congratulations to Prof. Suzanne Sindi for receiving an Integrated NSF Support Promoting Interdisciplinary Research and Education (INSPIRE) grant with Professors Rick Dale and Dave Ardell to study common principles that guide evolution of structures at the linguistic and molecular levels.   • Graduate student John Loffeld successfully defended his dissertation, "Design, Implementation and Performance of Exponential Integrators for High Performance Computing Applications" on Oct. 10, 2013. John worked under the supervision of Prof. Mayya Tokman. Congratulations, Dr. Loffeld!

  • Graduate student Nitesh Kumar successfully defended his dissertation, "Modeling Dependence in Data: Options Pricing and Random Walks" on March 11, 2013. Nitesh worked under the supervision of Prof. Harish Bhat. Congratulations, Dr. Kumar!

  • Undergraduate students David Jones and Rachel Schlick won the 2011-12 UC Merced Applied Math Prize. David Jones is a junior majoring in Applied Math, and Rachel Schlick is an Earth Systems Science major.
     
  • Undergraduate Applied Math major David Jones was selected as a 2011-2012 NASA Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) Scholar. In addition to receiving a one-year scholarship, David will have the opportunity to participate in a NASA internship during the summer of 2012. David is currently a UC LEADS scholar and is working with Prof. Roummel Marcia on research problems in signal processing. He recently received a Student Research Presentation Award in Applied Mathematics at the 2011 Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science National Conference in San Jose, CA. Congratulations, David!
     
  • Prof. Mayya Tokman received a $300K grant from the NSF to develop new numerical methods for large scale scientific problems. Prof. Tokman and her students will be constructing, analyzing and implementing novel exponential integrators for serial and parallel computer architectures. The new techniques will be used to study problems in various fields such as fluid dynamics, plasma physics and biology. Some of this research will be a part of Graduate Numerical Analysis (Math 231) and Mathematical Modeling (Math 150) courses taught in 2011/2012 academic year.
     
  • The Graduate Division recognized graduate student Nitesh Kumar at the annual End of the Year Reception on May 12, 2011 for his scholarly achievements in applied mathematics for the 2010-2011 academic year. Nitesh was cited for being "a humble and personable individual whose company everyone enjoys". In addition, Nitesh was recently awarded a Graduate Research Council summer research grant to continue his work on mathematical finance.
     
  • Graduate student David Martin received the 2010-11 Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching award for the School of Natural Sciences. He was the teaching assistant for Math 125 (Intermediate Differential Equations) in Fall, 2010, and for Math 122 (Complex Variables) in Spring, 2011.
     
  • Congratulations to Prof. Boaz Ilan for achieving the rank of Associate Professor in the School of Natural Sciences.
     
  • Graduate student Derya Şahin passed her qualifying exam on Apr. 20, 2011. She is advised by Prof. Boaz Ilan.
     
  • Undergraduate senior Calvin Heim won the 2010-11 UC Merced Applied Math Prize. Calvin is an applied math major with a customized environmental engineering emphasis. Honourable Mention went to Brent Edmunds, who is an applied major with a computer science emphasis.
     
  • Undergraduate senior James Hernandez's paper, "Bounded gradient projection methods for sparse signal recovery," was accepted to the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing in Prague, Czech Republic. The paper is co-authored by Zachary Harmany, Daniel Thompson, and Prof. Roummel Marcia. James is a 2010-11 University of California's Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (UC AGEP) scholar.
     
  • Graduate student Daniel Thompson's paper, "Sparse video recovery using linearly constrained gradient projection," was accepted to the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing in Prague, Czech Republic. The paper is co-authored by Zachary Harmany and Prof. Roummel Marcia.
     
  • Financial Crash Sends UC Merced Mathematician into New Territory -- an article on Prof. Harish Bhat's recent work on financial mathematics with graduate student Nitesh Kumar. Their paper, entitled "Markov Tree Options Pricing" in the proceedings of the 2009 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Conference on Mathematics for Industry and can be found here.
