Applied Math Graduate Program alumni elected as SIAM Activity Group officers

Two alumni have been elected as officers for the SIAM Applied Math Education Activity Group.

Dr. Shelley Poole is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Metropolitan State University of Denver.  She completed her Ph.D. in 2014 under the supervision of Prof. Arnold Kim.  As a graduate student, she received the Dean’s Distinguished Fellowship.  Her article, “Designing an Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Course for Mathematics Majors and Minors,” was recently published in PRIMUS, a journal that focuses on teaching undergraduate mathematics.  Dr. Poole will serve as Chair of the Applied Math Education Activity Group from Jan. 1, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2024

Dr. Mario Bañuelos is an Assistant Professor and Associate Chair of Mathematics at Fresno State.  He completed his Ph.D. in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Suzanne Sindi.  As a graduate student, he was the recipient of the 2017-18 UC Merced Fletcher Jones Fellowship. He is currently a SIAM Science Policy Fellow.  Dr. Bañuelos will serve as Vice-Chair of the Applied Math Education Activity Group from Jan. 1, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2024.
