Conor Olive

Bio:
Conor is an excellent undergraduate student who is about to embark in a graduate career that combines Applied Mathematics, Geophysics, and Computer Science. Conor first joined UC Merced as a transfer student in Fall 2022. In class, Conor regularly displayed his quickness at grasping new topics. He could usually answer any question one would ask the class after hearing a single explanation on a new topic. However, his quiet nature made it such that he would usually save his answers for the most difficult questions. He could also produce professional grade videos in response to assignments. In addition to performing extremely well in class, Conor has been doing research with Professors François Blanchette and Nathan Willis since Spring 2023. His research is an ambitious project to model particle clouds generated by deep-sea mining. In April 2023, while the project was only a few months old, Conor presented a poster at the local SIAM undergraduate conference and won a prize for best poster. After he did a different summer research program, he continued working on this project and in January 2024 he presented his findings at the international Joint Mathematics Meeting. Overall, we believe that Conor Olive has been an outstanding undergraduate and promises to have a similarly outstanding career. Our only concern, as his academic family, are his aptitudes and affections for mountaineering. We find it all a bit dangerous. Conor, what's wrong with good old hiking? The entire Applied Mathematics Departments enthusiastically supports Conor Olive’ nomination for the “Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award” for his excellent academic performance and for achievements in research.
