SIAM Student Chapter Seminar: Dr. Sven Leyffer

November 3, 2021 - 11:30am

Announcement Message

The UC Merced SIAM Student chapter is excited to announce that Dr. Sven Leyffer (Senior Computational Mathematician, Argonne National Laboratory) will present "Nonlinear Optimization at The National Labs", as part of the Sustainable Horizons Institute's Computing Research Leadership Council (CRLC) series. Registration will be required via the following registration link. The lecture will take place Wednesday, November 3rd from 11:30-1:00 pm (Pacific Time), followed by a thirty-minute conversation in which participants will have the opportunity to ask Dr. Leyffer questions about his professional experiences at the laboratory. This event will be hosted by the UC Merced SIAM Student Chapter, see the attached flyer for further information.

Abstract:

We review a range of challenging DOE applications in design and control that are formulated as nonlinear optimization problems, ranging from the modeling of gas and electricity networks, over the design of new materials, to the analysis of complex data. We show how research into new algorithms and solution techniques enables DOE scientists to solve these applications.
