Graduate student Lu, Yu defends PhD dissertation

Graduate student, Lu, Yu, successfully defended his PhD dissertation, titled "Negative Binomial Optimization for Signal Processing, Medical Imaging, and Deep Learning Applications," on April 30, 2025.  Lu, Yu is advised by Prof. Roummel Marcia.  His committee members include Prof. Erica Rutter (Applied Mathematics), Prof. Arnold Kim (Applied Mathematics), and Prof. Changqing Li (Electrical Engineering).

Lu, Yu received his B.S. in Mathematics from University of California, Los Angeles in 2020.  Yu interned at the Joint Genomes Institute in the summer of 2024 and at Argonne National Laboratory in the fall of 2024, working under the supervision of Dr. Sven Leyffer.  He is the recipient of Graduate Division Dissertation Fellowship for Applied Mathematics for the spring 2025 semester and the 2025 Applied Mathematics Excellence in Research Award.  Lu, Yu presented his research at the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo in Niagra Falls, Canada as well as the 2024 IEEE International Workshop on Machine Learning for Signal Processing in London, UK.  Lu, Yu will join Meta in June, 2025.
