
Applied Mathematics graduate program alumnus, Dr. Omar DeGuchy, returned to UC Merced to deliver the keynote address at the Graduate Division Fall Commencement ceremonies. Dr. DeGuchy is currently a scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he serves as a technical lead and principal investigator on projects related to the application of machine learning to problems involving national security. While at UC Merced, Dr. DeGuchy served as the president of UC Merced's Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Student Chapter and mentored undergraduate and other graduate students in research. At LLNL, he is the group lead for the analytic software group in the global security computing applications division and the lead for the Data Science Challenge, a summer program that brings students from UC Merced to the lab to work on mission-relevant problems. Dr. DeGuchy earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from UC Merced in 2020 under the supervision of Prof. Roummel Marcia.
