Patrick (EunSang) Park

Bio:

Since joining UC Merced in Fall 2022, Patrick earned a place on both the Dean's Honors List and the Chancellor's Honors List every semester and academic year. He is on track to graduate in three and a half years with a GPA above 3.9. Patrick has built an impressive research record throughout his academic journey at UC Merced. In his first semester, he proactively sought summer research opportunities from Prof. Changho Kim, his MATH 024 instructor, which led him to apply for UC Merced’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) programs. Remarkably, Patrick was selected for UC LEADS (University of California's Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees), the most prestigious program, which is rarely awarded to first-year students. Since then, Patrick has worked on several stochastic modeling projects under Prof. Kim’s supervision. For his first research project on the agent-based modeling of infectious disease spread, he received an Undergraduate Research Award at the 2023 NDiSTEM Conference. His second project on the stochastic modeling of reversible adsorption of dimers on various finite lattice structures earned him an opportunity to give an oral presentation at the 2025 Joint Mathematics Meetings. Patrick is currently preparing a manuscript for this project as a co-author with Profs. Lei, Blanchette, and Kim, which will be submitted to the journal “SIAM Review.” He performed all kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and analyzed the results. Additionally, Patrick completed a summer research internship in Computer Science at UC Irvine in 2024 and participated in an REU program in Mathematics at WPI in 2025. The REU project resulted in a manuscript submitted to the journal “Reliability Engineering & System Safety.” Beyond his academic and research achievements, Patrick serves as President of the student club “Koreans in Merced: Cultural Hubs and Initiatives” and is a member of the Math Club. He plans to attend graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. in applied mathematics. The entire Applied Mathematics Departments enthusiastically supports Patrick (EunSang) Park’ nomination for the Applied Mathematics “Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award” for his excellent academic performance. Congratulations, Patrick!
