Asriel Camora

Bio: We are pleased to award Asriel Camora the Outstanding Graduating Award in Applied Mathematics. Asriel is an intellectual and inquisitive student and has solid interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. Having enrolled in the Applied Mathematical Sciences major in Fall 2022, she is expected to complete her studies in 3 years. Asriel has been very active in participating in the math activities on campus. First of all, Asriel was instrumental in establishing the Math Club at UC Merced. She served as treasurer during its first year and is currently the vice president of the club.  Her contributions have increased female participation and made the club a safe and inclusive space with lots of fun math activities. In addition, for the Problem of the Month for March 2023, which was one of the most challenging problems, Asriel submitted an excellent solution addressing not only the original problem but also the generalized problem and won the prize for that month. Asriel is also a dedicated self-learner. By approaching a Computer Science graduate student for assistance, she has completed a couple of her own projects. At the first SIAM Northern and Central California Section Conference (NCC24), she gave a poster presentation for her findings on designing and implementing a genetic Monte Carlo Tree search algorithm to optimize finite-length discrete game decision trees. We hope that Asriel will continue her advanced study and intellectual journey with great success!
