The Applied Mathematics Department recently hosted a new student orientation and warmly welcomed our first-year and transfer students. During the orientation, students were introduced to the many opportunities available in Applied Mathematics, including our three core areas of study and nine emphasis tracks.
The program also highlighted the importance of academic advising, encouraging students to meet regularly with their advisors to stay on track toward graduation. Students learned strategies for succeeding in their first semester, including expectations for academic performance, professionalism, and the cumulative nature of mathematics coursework.
In addition, the orientation provided information about support resources such as faculty office hours, Learning Assistants, the Math Center, and CAPS. The event concluded with a preview of upcoming opportunities, including the undergraduate mixer, faculty advising activities, and ways to stay connected with the department community.
We are excited to welcome our new students and look forward to their success in the Applied Mathematics program.
